GSHA AWARD NOMINATIONS

All of us in the organization know GSHA members who have made outstanding contributions to our profession. GSHA calls upon you to nominate them for the awards which recognize their achievements. Please take the time to nominate these individuals for the awards which they so richly deserve. Nominations are being accepted for Honors of the Association, Clinician of the Year, Clinical Achievement Award, Jack Bess Memorial Award, Jack Bess Memorial Scholarship, Legislator Appreciation Award, and Volunteer Appreciation Award.
The “Honors of the Association” may be presented to individuals upon recommendation by the Committee and approval of the GSHA Executive Council. This award recognizes professional or scientific achievement in the field of speech, language, and hearing.
Criteria
A nominee for Honors of the Association must have been an active participant in
the profession and GSHA no less than five years. The nominee, except in unusual
cases, must show outstanding contribution to the profession in at least three of
the following areas:
Clinical service in the area of communication disorders.
Academic teaching in communication science and disorders.
Research and publications contributing to the knowledge needed by the profession.
Administrative services in the area of communication science and disorders.
Service to GSHA including service to committees, task forces, Executive Council, or in other significant capacities.
Services similar to those mentioned in #5 for related speech, language, hearing associations, or local, regional, or national professional organizations.
Procedures of Nominating
Care should be taken that each category on the nomination sheets filled out completely. Only those activities described as outstanding should be described under separate categories on the nomination form. The final judgment of outstanding service in three areas is made by the recommendation of the honors Committee to the GSHA Executive Council. The nominee receiving a 2/3 majority is selected to received Honors of the Association. These procedures should be followed for nomination:
Sponsor: Nomination of a member for consideration of Honors should be initiated by any GSHA member.
Co-Sponsor: The nomination shall be seconded by two members designated as co-sponsors.
No individual may participate as a sponsor or co-sponsor for more than one nominee in any calendar year.
Two or three sponsors or co-workers for a nominee may not within the past 10 years have related to the nominee as fellow student, co-worker, student, or teacher. Efforts should be made to secure co-sponsors who know the individual by his/her professional merits.
The nominee may be made aware of his/her nomination before it is submitted, and may be asked to provide background information which is needed to develop a complete nomination. After this has been done, the nomination, including recommendations, shall remain confidential between the sponsor(s), the Committee, and the Executive Council.

The “Clinician of the Year” award may be presented to an individual upon recommendation of the Committee and approval of the GSHA Executive Council. This award recognizes outstanding professional achievement of a speech-language pathologist or audiologist whose primary employment activity is the provision of direct clinical services. Individuals nominated must hold at least a Master’s degree in speech-language pathology or audiology, and have three or more years of experience working in a clinical or school setting.
Criteria for Election
1. Personal characteristics.
2. Assessment and management of speech, language, and/or hearing disorders.
3. Professional contributions in the areas of speech, language and/or hearing disorders.
4. Service to local, state, or national professional organizations.
5. Innovative program design or therapeutic methods for individuals with speech, language, and/or hearing disorders.

(“LOUIS M. DICARLO AWARD” NOMINATION)
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF) has invited state speech, language, and hearing associations to participate in the Clinical Achievement Awards program. Each state association has been asked to select one individual from within the state to receive an award for demonstrated contributions to the advancement of knowledge in clinical practices in speech-language pathology and audiology. That individual named by the state association will receive from ASHF and Psi Iota Xi National Serve Sonority a check for $100 and a certificate. From the state Clinical Achievement Award winners, one individual will be chosen by the Foundation Board of Directors as the recipient of the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement. That person will receive a framed certificate and a grant of up to $2,500 to further the project(s) upon which the award is based. The recipient of the DiCarlo Award will be announced and recognized at the ASHA Convention.
The DiCarlo recipient will be chosen for advancement of knowledge in clinical practices as evidenced by significant recent accomplishment (within the past two to three years) in the advancement of clinical service in speech-language pathology and audiology. Nominees are not limited to any particular type of clinical achievement or activity, and past nominees are eligible. Some eligible activities or accomplishments for which an individual would be awarded the DiCarlo Award might include (for example purposes only):
Achievement with a single client or group of clients
Clinical service programming
Program Development
Achievement in a state or local organization or government agency activity
Clinical teaching, research or administration
This award is established in memory of Jack Bess for his many years of support of and contributions to the speech-language pathology and audiology professions. Nominations are requested from members of the Executive Council. The Award may be presented to an individual upon recommendation by the Committee and approval of the GSHA Executive Council. This award recognizes outstanding contribution to the Georgia Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Criteria
A nominee must have been a
member of GSHA for five (5) years or less. A nominee must have made a
significant contribution to GSHA by demonstrating enthusiasm for the
organization and a willingness to accept responsibility and serve the
organization in an effective manner.
The recipient will be selected annually by the Executive Council from recommendations from the Committees of Honors at the last meeting of the GSHA year. The award will be presented at the full membership annual meeting (convention) following the designated board meeting.
The award will be a check for $100 drawn annually from the Jack Bess Memorial Fund and a plaque.
Procedures for Nomination
Sponsor: Nomination of a member for the Jack Bess Award shall be initiated by any standing committee member of the Executive Council.
Appropriate forms will be completed and submitted to the Chair of the Committee three (3) months prior to the last Executive Council meeting of the GSHA year, to be presented at the next Executive Council meeting.
A nominee may be made aware of the nomination before it is submitted, and may be asked to supply background information needed for the nomination. All information shall remain confidential between the sponsor, the Committee, and the Executive Council.
Nomination forms and guidelines for preparing the nomination can be obtained from the Chair of the Committee, or from the GSHA Office.
Administration of the Fund
The fund will be established May 1, 1987, in memory of Jack Bess.
The fund will be administered by the GSHA Management Office.
Contributions to the fund can be made at any time to the GSHA Office.
A financial report of monies in the fund will be made to the Executive Council at each meeting.
Solicitation of funds will be made at conventions, through the GSHA magazine, through periodic mailings to the GSHA membership, and through the ASHA journal.
The check for the Jack Bess Memorial Award will be drawn annually from the Jack Bess Fund.
To avoid bank service charge, a base of $100.00 will remain in the fund at all times (EC1987-7-10)

JACK BESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Procedures of Application
A letter of application from the student should include:
A personal statement relating to the reasons the student is pursuing a degree in communication disorders.
Future goals focusing on what the student hopes to contribute to the professions.
Statement regarding how this award will help the student reach these goals.
Any additional information the student feels is pertinent, such as financial need.
In addition to the above information, two letters of recommendation must be submitted.
A letter of recommendation from a faculty member regarding the student’s scholastic achievement, leadership skills, and related professional involvement in research or service at the local or national levels.
Letter of recommendation from a clinical supervisor (on-campus or off-campus) regarding the student’s clinical potential, leadership skills, and related professional involvement.
The amount of the scholarship will be $500.00 and will be taken from the Jack Bess Memorial Fund.
To give visible recognition to legislators who exhibit exceptional involvement as an advocate for individuals with speech, language, or hearing impairments.
Exceptional involvement may be defined as including, but not limited to, the following:
Sponsorship of legislation directly related to our professions.
Sponsorship of legislation indirectly related to our professions, e.g., legislation that would improve the quality of healthcare for all Georgians as a whole or a specific populations (allied health issues).
Opposition of legislation that would be detrimental to the goals and objectives of our professions.
Education of other legislators concerning the goals and objectives of our professions.
To give visible recognition to members of the Georgia Speech-Language-Hearing Association (GSHA) who, as volunteers, exhibit exceptional involvement.
Exceptional involvement may be defined as including, but not limited to, the following:
Active participation in group discussions
Attendance majority of group meetings
Willingness to accept responsibility for specific aspects of a group’s charge(s)
Timely submission of reports
A genuine eagerness to support the goals and mission of the GSHA while serving as a volunteer
Devotion of unusual amounts of time as a volunteer
The award will consist of a personalized certificate to be presented at the annual GSHA Convention. A list of honorees will be published along with a photograph in the GSHA magazine. The volunteers being honored will be notified in writing by the GSHA President-Elect prior to the annual convention.
Nominations may be made by any member of the GSHA by the determined deadline. Nominations will be submitted to the President Elect and Regional Representatives who are responsible for notifying the GSHA President of the volunteers to be honored and for completing the personalized certificates.
