Abstract:  Clinical supervisors recognize that the supervisory relationship is a partnership, based on trust and a spirit of collaboration. The research, evidence and key elements of effective supervision based on the collaborative nature of the relationship will be highlighted throughout the presentation. Stages of skill acquisition, current best practices and trends in clinical supervision will be discussed. Supervisory style and communication and their influence on the supervisory relationship will also be discussed. Participants will discuss how ASHA’s 2016 self-assessment tool may be used to rate their own competencies and to develop personal goals.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the components of a successful supervisory relationship
2. Discuss evidence-supported strategies promoting self-assessment through critical reflection.
3. Describe a self-assessment tool for development of competencies in supervision.

Biography: Melanie W. Hudson, M.A. CCC-SLP Fellow of ASHA and National Academies of Practice, and Board Certified Specialist, Child Language and Disorders. She served on ASHA’s Board of Directors, Board of Ethics, and Board of Special Interest Group Coordinators. Publications include 4th and 5th editions of “Professional Issues in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, (Lubinski & Hudson, 2013; Hudson & DeRuiter, 2019, Plural Publishing), and “The Clinical Education and Supervisory Process in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology,” (McCrea & Brasseur, 2019). She served as President of the Georgia Speech-Language and Hearing Association and on the Georgia Board of Examiners, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
