Presented by: Sucheta Kamath, CEO & Founder of ExQ, Executive Function Specialist

Abstract Personal independence, effective goal management, and strong communication skills are essential for individuals to advocate for themselves and achieve meaningful life outcomes. These abilities are supported by Executive Function (EF)—a set of neurocognitive processes including working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and goal-directed persistence. EF skills drive planning, prioritization, emotional regulation, communication, and follow-through, yet the science and teachability of these skills remain poorly understood in many professional and policy contexts. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists work at the intersection of communication, cognition, and functional independence, positioning them uniquely to recognize and advocate for the development of EF skills across educational and community settings. As EF demands in schools and workplaces increase while skill development lags, many students graduate without the self-management and learning strategies necessary for postsecondary success. These challenges reflect skill gaps, not intelligence gaps. This session will highlight the role of EF as preventive infrastructure supporting literacy, behavior regulation, mental health, and workforce readiness. Participants will learn how EF instruction improves access to learning and reduces downstream challenges for students and educators. Attendees will also be introduced to an Executive Function Advocacy Toolkit and practical strategies for communicating EF science to policymakers, building relationships with legislators, and mobilizing professional advocacy through calls, letters, and social media to promote sustainable change in education and community systems.
Learning Objectives As a result of this course, participants will: 1. Describe the core neurocognitive components of Executive Function—working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and goal-directed persistence—and explain how these processes influence communication, emotional regulation, learning, and functional independence across academic and everyday contexts. 2. Analyze how Executive Function skill development relates to policy-relevant outcomes, including student wellness, academic achievement, behavioral regulation, workforce readiness, and long-term economic mobility. 3. Develop an evidence-informed advocacy message that communicates the importance of Executive Function skill development and articulates the role of speech-language pathologists and audiologists in promoting EF as a preventive, brain-based strategy for improving educational and community outcomes.
